Spurs: Lenglet to Tottenham transfer intensifies

The Frenchman has been repeatedly linked with a move back to north London.

Following a report from Spain, it appears as though Tottenham Hotspur’s potential move to re-sign Barcelona defender Clement Lenglet could really accelerate this week.

    Will Spurs sign anyone?

Even though they have already agreed to contracts with goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, teenager Ashley Phillips, defender Micky van de Ven, playmaker James Maddison, winger Manor Solomon, and striker Alejo Veliz, the north Londoners could yet add more players before September 1.

Spurs have had a very strong start to the new season, going undefeated under new head coach Ange Postecoglou, who has so far successfully adapted his style of high-octane, attacking play.

The Lilywhites began their season with a 2-2 draw against Brentford on the road before defeating Man United last Saturday by a score of 2-0 at home, thanks to goals from Pape Matar Sarr and Lisandro Martinez (OG).

The loss of former star striker Harry Kane to Bayern Munich and Postecoglou’s prior admission that he needs another new defender are both critical issues that still need to be addressed.

An unsettling statistic for Postecoglou and his coaching staff will be Spurs’ dismal 63 league goals in the English top tier alone last season, more than any other team above 15th in the table.

Tottenham has been connected with players like Torino defender Perr Schuurs and Bayer Leverkusen’s Edmond Tapsoba to fill in the vacancies since van de Ven’s arrival.

Lenglet, who spent the entire 2017–18 season on loan at N17, is another choice for a center-back and has Premier League experience with Spurs.

The Frenchman has been constantly linked with a return to the club, but Sport reports that the potential move may pick some steam this week.

Lenglet’s contract to Saudi Arabia has fallen through, and the Spanish news agency believes Barca are “open to negotiating the transfer of Lenglet to Tottenham”.

Lenglet’s future needs to be decided before the end of this week, and Spurs are keen to re-sign him on another loan agreement.

This is due to the fact that his departure is vitally essential to make room for Joao Cancelo’s arrival from Man City.

What’s been said about Clement Lenglet?

Lenglet posted a cool 87.5% passing accuracy out of the back throughout his 26 league games for Tottenham last season, making him a potentially strong prospect for Postecoglou as he wants to play out from the back (WhoScored).

The former Sevilla player is already accustomed to the rigors of English football’s high-intensity competition, as evidenced by goalkeeper Hugo Lloris’ praise for his countryman last summer.

“He’s a modern defender,” Lloris stated.

It’s convenient to be able to play from the rear. He can be very strong in one-on-one situations, has a tremendous left foot, and is strong in the air.

“Even though it’s never simple when you first get to the Premier League, and he will have to get used to the intensity of the games,” the source continued, “he is a high level player with experience.”
