Daniel Levy admits his past ‘mistakes’ he made at Tottenham

‘We’ve got our Tottenham back’ – Daniel Levy admits his past ‘mistakes’

Ange Postecoglou has drastically changed the environment at Tottenham since joining the team, according to Daniel Levy, who also noted that everyone on the Lilywhites is now moving in the same direction.

After the team bungled their way to an eighth-place finish at the end of the previous season, the mood at Spurs and in the surrounding area was as depressing as it had been in a long time.

When managers with impressive résumés like Antonio Conte and Jose Mourinho failed to guide Tottenham to success, there were doubts.

In an effort to restore entertaining football to N17, Levy and company decided to go back to a project manager in the summer and hired Postecoglou.

The Australian has so far more than lived up to expectations, immediately gaining the love of the crowd with his innovative brand of football.

Daniel Levy admits his mistakes at Tottenham

Levy commended Postecoglou for the influence he has had at the club while acknowledging that the choice of “win-now” managers had been a failure.

At the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium’s Fan Forum on September 23, the chairman of Tottenham said: “Maybe you’ll be surprised by my response, but I want to win as much as everyone else.

“But the disappointment of losing and the pressure from perhaps some players and a significant portion of the fan base that we needed to win, we needed to spend money, we needed to have a big manager, we needed to have a big name, it affected me.

“We came very close to winning at a period I experienced. We shared some incredibly enjoyable experiences with Mauricio. We changed our approach, so while we didn’t exactly succeed, we came extremely close. Bring in a trophy manager was the plan of action.

“Look, you have to learn from your mistakes. We did it twice. They are fantastic managers, but perhaps not for this club.

“For what we want, we want to play in a particular way, and if it means it will take us a little longer to win, maybe that’s the best move for us. Bring Ange in, in my opinion, was the best course of action because of this.

It’s easy, Levy continued. We now have our original Tottenham. I just have the impression that we’re watching football the way we used to, and that’s all we want to see—players playing attacking football with all of their might.

“We want the staff and the players to be able to engage with one another as well as the fans. You can sense it throughout the entire team, whether it’s at the training facility or at this stadium on non-matchdays. It is very obvious.

It is encouraging to hear Levy recognise that his choices for Conte and Mourinho were poor ones. He and the Tottenham administration will learn from the experience to never again forego playing terrific football for the possibility of winning more money and more success.
