The 14-year professional career of former Springbok Juan de Jongh came to an end last week when the Stormers announced his decision to hang up his boots.
WP’s pathway teams and players at the Stellenbosch Academy of Sport will be coached by the former center, head coach John Dobson announced to News24.
GIVING BACK TO HIS PROVINCE
Dobson was excited about De Jongh’s move into coaching, praising his upbeat, enthusiastic, and competent demeanor.
Dobson told News24, “We’re very pleased that there is an opportunity for him to stay in the system and move into coaching.”
Though it was not meant to be, in some respects we would have preferred the romantic conclusion with him on the field.
“He’s going to have an impact on the media and on coaching in ways that go beyond just playing right now. He always has a positive attitude, is enthusiastic and professional, and he knows exactly who we are playing for. He connects well with both the public and his supporters.
“I have no doubt he will play a huge role in inspiring the next generation of Stormers, and while we’re thrilled to have him here, we will miss him greatly.”
In addition to playing more than 70 games for Western Province after making his Super Rugby debut in 2010, De Jongh achieved his Stormers century during his second tenure in Cape Town.
After making his Test debut against Wales in 2010, he went on to play 19 times for the Springboks before playing his final Test match against New Zealand in 2016.
