Former Celtic centre-forward and now pundit Chris Sutton has outlined the current Hoops prospect whom he believes can reach the pinnacle of football.

Sutton has commended Yang Hyun-jun, who was harshly dismissed during the Hoops’ 2-0 loss to Hearts on Sunday.

Following his return from the Asian Cup, he appeared to be a rejuvenated player. Before the Tynecastle match this past weekend, Yang’s play had shown a notable improvement.

The Sunday before last, he made his debut at Motherwell and left a lasting impression. Then, midweek against Dundee, manager Brendan Rodgers started him, and he was named Man of the Match.

Naturally, the wide player was selected for Gorgie, and despite his early-game impressiveness—breaking through Hearts’ defense and gaining a penalty—his afternoon ended prematurely.

Sutton, however, has a slight suspicion that the 21-year-old can make it beyond Celtic: “Yang has come back from the Asian Cup and looked a new player”, he said (RecordSport).

“Despite his rawness and inconsistency, I have a sneaking suspicion that he has the potential to be the best winger at the team.

“He has a certain something about him, a quick wit and cunning. Although his last ball is still erratic, it is effective when it does.

Over the previous two weeks, Yang has apparently wowed a large portion of the Celtics fan base just as much as Sutton. He will, however, be suspended for the next two games against Livingston and St Johnstone unless the team files an appeal against his red card.

Although the team should have adequate depth to handle such a departure, given some of the Hoops’ antics, one can never be sure.

Celtic’s pursuit to find a striker to compete and provide backup for Kyogo Furuhashi took a strange turn in the eyes of many fans in January.

The Hoops support were expecting Brendan Rodgers to add a quality player to his ranks to help bolster the title run-in but when the club announced the signing of Adam Idah, it really confused the supporters.

Idah, a Republic of Ireland player, was regarded as Norwich City’s third-choice striker, therefore the deal didn’t make sense given that Celtic could have afforded to get an undisputed striker.

Therefore, it should come as no surprise that the supporters were criticizing the move rather than the individual. But now look at Idah. The 23-year-old attacker is making a big impression, and Andy Walker has already drawn comparisons between him and former Celtic striker Georgos Giakoumakis.

Walker commented on “The Go Radio Football Show” that the header he scored against Fir Park was very exceptional. In my opinion, it’s a significant opportunity for him personally. You definitely want to perform to the best of your abilities.

“I know that he’s up here on loan and I don’t know what the deal is if he excels here. Let’s say he scores another ten goals between now and the end of the season, do Celtic go and get him?

However, I believe it demonstrates that he has a certain disposition even if they don’t think he’s made a significant impact.

No one had ever heard of him, which is why we’re the same. All we knew about his potential was that. And every Celtic fan I spoke to was shocked that Celtic didn’t choose an experienced striker who was ready for the starting lineup.

“They can afford to do it through a financing arrangement. However, if he continues to score goals at that pace and appear so dangerous—especially after that headed goal—that will be something different from what Celtic has seen since Giakoumakis left.

 

The large, powerful striker who has been Celtic’s hallmark for the past 20 years has been missed.

Strikers like Henrik Larsson, Scott MacDonald, and Leigh Griffiths were complemented by players such as Chris Sutton, John Hartson, Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink, and Giorgos Samaras.

And I’m okay with it if Idah can contribute to Kyogo’s game in any way, whether it’s by competing for spots or as a starting pair. Observe how the Japanese attacker flourished while Giakoumakis was on top of him.
