Tottenham Hotspur have had a number of standout performers this season under the leadership of Ange Postecoglo, with Cristian Romero being one of those who have caught the eye.
Romero and James Maddison were appointed vice captains by Postecoglou after Harry Kane left for Bayern Munich earlier this summer.
Romero and summer signing Micky van de Ven have established a strong defensive partnership at the core of Postecoglou’s Spurs lineup. Romero can move forward and participate in attacking phases thanks to van de Ven’s quickness as a cover.
During the pre-Aston Villa press conference this afternoon, Postecoglou was questioned about Romero and praised the Argentine international.
Romero has matured under Ange Postecoglou
Postecoglou told Football.London: He’s outstanding but I thought he was from day one. He’s a World Cup winner. You don’t win World Cups as a starter, a contributor [unless you’re good].
“He is a terrific kid, a tremendous defender, and he has a great background. He is also highly motivated and dedicated. Extremely competitive in anything that he does, and I adore that.
“He’s a fantastic role model for the other guys and the best athlete you could ask for.”
Romero’s red card against Chelsea was arguably the sole black mark on his record this season, but other players have gotten away with comparable punishment.
As vice captain, he has undoubtedly shown that he is not as reckless when faced with problems as we have seen in past seasons, and he seems to be enjoying playing a senior position in the dressing room.

‘Outstanding’: Ange Postecoglou says he’s been so impressed by £28m player Arsenal reportedly want to sign
Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has heaped praise on reported Arsenal target Ollie Watkins.
Spurs take on Aston Villa on Sunday in what could be an exciting game to watch. Both sides have dangerous players in attack and we’re sure Watkins will fancy his chances of scoring against Tottenham again.
Ange Postecoglou praises Arsenal target Ollie Watkins
Arsenal have been linked with about a dozen strikers over the last few months, and Aston Villa star Ollie Watkins is one of them, as reported by Chris Wheatley on ShotsTV.
The £28 million (BBC) Englishman is having the season of his life under Unai Emery. He has scored 21 goals and provided 10 assists in what has been a truly magnificent campaign.
Arsenal have been free-scoring over the last few weeks, but they are very likely to make a move for a new striker in the upcoming summer transfer window.
They’ll definitely have a number of options on their shortlist, but it’s hard to ignore Watkins after the kind of season he has had so far.
In his news conference today, Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou praised the rumored Arsenal target as “outstanding,” suggesting that he is a huge fan of the player.
“I think when you look at Villa it’s more about the collective but Ollie Watkins has been outstanding,” the Australian stated, as reported by HaytersTV.
It’s not just this year; if you look at his career, he and the coaches he’s worked with deserve credit for his ability to play game after game and yet maintain a high level of performance and progress.
“We can’t just focus on him because of the amazing way he leads the line.”
Ollie Watkins is an Arsenal fan
Arsenal are one of the biggest clubs in the world, and there are quite a few players in the Premier League who grew up supporting the Gunners.
Ollie Wakins, a standout for Aston Villa who has frequently been linked to a move to Arsenal, openly acknowledged that he was a Gooner as well.
In a post-match interview in November 2020, following his brace of goals and Villa’s 3-0 victory over Michael Arteta’s team at the Emirates, Watkins revealed to the world that he was raised in an Arsenal household and still supports the team.
“I don’t think my dad or uncle Baz will be too happy,” he remarked. They support Arsenal, just as I do, but I’m giddy with excitement. They will truly adore it, I’m sure of it. I am ecstatic.
