Super Bowl champion quarterback Russell Wilson was signed to a one-year deal to begin the week, and incumbent starter Kenny Pickett was shipped out of town to the Philadelphia Eagles on Friday.
So, will Fields enter the fold and push Wilson in the quarterback room for the starting job?
Fields was informed directly by Steelers coach Mike Tomlin that Wilson is the starting lineup, according to sources who spoke with Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated. According to Breer, Fields expressed his excitement for the fresh start in Pittsburgh to others in his immediate vicinity.
The same was heard by NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, who was informed by a source that “Russ is the starter.”
Even though Wilson is guaranteed to start at quarterback come training camp, don’t count on Tomlin to hold back if he thinks Fields can come into the game and ignite the offense. It’s a good problem to have a backup with a ton of starting experience, after all.
The way things play out in Pittsburgh the next season will be interesting to watch, since the offense is anticipated to change significantly.
