Former Tennessee Vols baseball star Garrett Crochet received some great news this week.
Crochet learned that he’ll be the opening day starter for the Chicago White Sox on March 28 against the Detroit Tigers.
Crochet, who pitched at Tennessee from 2018 to 2020 after a standout career at Ocean Springs High School in Mississippi, was selected by the White Sox in the first round of the 2020 MLB Draft.
The former Vol, who missed the 2022 MLB season after undergoing Tommy John surgery, has been used as a reliever by the White Sox. This spring, he was just hoping to earn a spot in the starting rotation. Getting the opening day nod came as a surprise for Crochet.
“Very shocked, to say the least,” said Crochet. “I heard they had some exciting news for me and I thought it was just that I made the rotation.”
Crochet’s start on opening day will be his first career MLB start.
