Eric Dier reveals the lack of ‘tactical’ training under Postecoglou at Tottenham
Eric Dier has declared that he trained under Ange Postecoglou, the Australian manager of Tottenham Hotspur, during his tenure at the team. The 30-year-old disclosed that the former Celtic manager does not dedicate his training sessions to tactical work.
The England international ended his ten-year tenure at North London last winter when he signed a first loan deal to Bayern Munich and moved to Germany. The center-back made 365 appearances for the Lilywhites, demonstrating his devotion to the team.
During his tenure at the team, Dier became a vital member of the squad under Mauricio Pochettino, Jose Mourinho, and Antonio Conte.
Eric Dier gives insights into Tottenham’s tactical shift
While the 30-year-old, now at Bayern, never featured predominantly under Ange, having played only four times this season at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium after falling under the pecking order, He opened up about life under Postecoglou and questioned the training methods of the 58-year-old.
Dier also compared the time under Ange to that under Conte and how it was easier to understand tactical sequences under the latter.
While speaking to Manchester United icon Gary Neville on The Overlap, Eric Dier said:
‘Interestingly, he really doesn’t do any tactical work (in training). What he does is, every single training drill from Monday to Friday is drawn up to represent the way that he wants to play. Conte, I could do it blind, but that was a lot of tactical work Monday to Friday, a lot of ten versus zero, walkthroughs. You were so well drilled, it would be engrained in you.’
While Dier has been a huge servant to the club, it seems like everyone on Tottenham’s current roster understands the tactical needs of the gaffer. Maybe that is what resulted in his Spurs departure.
Tottenham will now prepare for a big game at St. James Park at the weekend as Ange’s army looks to solidify their fourth spot.
