Premier League delete ‘Bizarre’ official post about Everton and Nottm Forest points deductions

The Premier League have deleted a post on X which hinted Sheffield United could be saved from relegation after the appeals over Everton and Nottingham Forest’s points deductions.

The Premier League’s post was shared by journalist Richard Buxton on X with the caption: “They’ve now deleted this. Probably because it was an utterly bizarre take.”

“After their loss to Newcastle, Sheffield United are demoted awaiting Everton and Nottingham Forest’s points-deduction appeals,” the post itself stated.

This suggested that Everton might receive an additional 20 points for their appeal (the point differential that separates them from Sheffield United), and Forest might receive an additional 10 points in the similar manner.

Both teams contested their most recent penalty, which were for breaking profit and sustainability rules—the Toffees lost two points and the Forest four.

Given the intensity of the outcry surrounding the points deduction, it would have been reasonable to believe that the Premier League would steer clear of any issue involving Everton and Forest this season, but the deleted post has just fueled the flames.

Back-to-back home wins over Burnley, Nottingham Forest, Liverpool, and Brentford guaranteed Everton’s survival; nevertheless, the since-deleted message suggests that supporters shouldn’t yet start to unwind.

The fans will learn everything they need to know from the fact that it was quickly taken down from their social media accounts: it was a ridiculous remark that didn’t really take into account the current circumstances or the effect it was having on the clubs and fan bases.

As Buxton said, it was a bizarre take and one that made little sense in the context of the situation. Was the Premier League account suggesting those extra giant points deductions could happen? Only they know.

Most recently, Andy Burnham has insisted the fans will not forget the way they have been treated by the league this season – claiming he would speak more on the subject in due course, having been highly critical of them already this season.
