‘Very strange’… Former Liverpool striker claims Daniel Levy wanted to sign him for Tottenham

A former Liverpool striker has admitted that Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy attempted to sign him before his switch to Anfield.

Liverpool have beaten Spurs to some crucial signings in recent years, with the most recent being Luis Diaz.

But it would appear that Liverpool also pipped Spurs to a signing almost 20 years ago as Dirk Kuyt has revealed he turned down a move to north London.

Tottenham tried to sign former Liverpool star Dirk Kuyt

Kuyt arrived at Anfield back in 2006 after Liverpool snapped up the Dutchman from Feyenoord. The forward went on to make 285 appearances for the Reds and was known as a big-game player.

Now, Kuyt has been speaking on the Kieft Jansen Egmond Gijp podcast and revealed he was subject to interest from Spurs a year before moving to Merseyside.

But the former Liverpool star opted against a switch to Tottenham as he was reluctant to leave Feyenoord without a recognised striker on deadline day.

“One year before I left for Liverpool, I was able to go to Tottenham Hotspur on the last day of the transfer market,” Kuyt said.

“Spurs chairman Daniel Levy called, he wanted me. I thought that was a very strange moment to leave Feyenoord behind. Leaving Feyenoord without a striker, albeit with a bag of money.

“Then [agent] Rob Jansen and I decided together not to do that.” as quoted by talkSPORT.

    Kuyt’s record for Liverpool

Despite not being the most technically gifted striker to grace Anfield., Kuyt never lacked in terms of his effort levels.

The Dutchman netted 71 times and provided 41 assists in 285 games for Liverpool. He was also part of the Liverpool side which scooped the League Cup in 2012 before joining Fenerbahce that summer.

Interestingly, Kuyt would have left Spurs with the same number of trophies had he opted for a switch to north London.

Tottenham’s last piece of silverware came under Juande Ramos as they lifted the League Cup back in 2008.
