U2 bass guitarist Adam Clayton still hasn’t found what he’s looking for when it comes to love.
The 64-year-old has shocked his fans by announcing that his 10-year marriage to Mariana Teixeira de Carvalho is over.
The rocker tied the knot with the glamorous Brazilian-born lawyer in 2013 and the couple have a daughter, six-year-old Alba.
A spokesperson for the couple confirmed on the weekend that the pair had already divorced, describing the split as “amicable”.
“After more than 10 years of marriage, musician Adam Clayton and lawyer Mariana Teixeira de Carvalho have amicably divorced,” the statement read, according to Irish newspaper Sunday World.
“Both will continue to be fully involved in the care of their daughter and they request that the family’s privacy be respected.”
The pair dated for four years before getting married.
They wed in a small ceremony at a Dublin registry office and celebrated a few days later with 150 guests, including U2 bandmates Bono, The Edge and Larry Mullen Jr, at a 14th century chateau near Cannes in France.
The couple placed a personal ad in The Irish Times in July 2017 to announce the birth of their daughter.
“Adam and Mariana Clayton are delighted to announce the birth of their beautiful baby girl Alba,” they wrote in the announcement.
The U2 star also has a son, born in 2010, from a previous relationship.
Clayton was briefly engaged to English supermodel Naomi Campbell.
The couple appeared on The Late Late Show in 1994 announcing their engagement, but their relationship was over by the end of that year.
In 2006, Clayton became engaged to Suzie Smith, a former assistant to the band’s manager Paul McGuinness, but they split up the following year.
In 2017, the musician explained how he met Mariana.
“I was in Brazil and I met a lawyer who was smart and beautiful,” he said as he accepted a Stevie Ray Vaughan Award for supporting a fund which gives musicians access to addiction recovery treatment.
“We started dating.
“I got married in sobriety to Mariana.
“I didn’t think that would happen.
“She’s never seen me drinking, but she does know me crazy.
“Thank you, Mariana, for the wonderful life we have together and for making every day more meaningful.”
Clayton has been open about his drug and alcohol use in the past.
He entered rehab for alcohol addiction during the 1990s and said he had always had the full support of the other members of U2.
“We have a pact with each other,” he said in an interview.
“In our band, no one will be a casualty.
“We all come home, or none of us come home.
“No one will be left behind.”
