Dutch footballer ‘egomaniacal’ as Leeds United man slammed for what he did v West Brom

Leeds United attacker Joel Piroe has been torn into by Andy Hinchliffe for a “really selfish” incident in the Whites’ clash with West Brom.

Daniel Farke’s side headed into the break against the Baggies level at 0-0 at The Hawthorns on Saturday (17 August) with both sides struggling to fashion any concrete scoring chances.

On the rare occasions Leeds did break forward, their final ball was left wanting and Sky Sports pundit Hinchliffe was quick to slam Piroe in particular when he opted to shoot instead of picking out Wilfried Gnonto.

Speaking on Sky Sports Main Event on Saturday (17 August, 12:52) he said: “It’s really selfish, he’s got Gnonto in acres of space to his left.

“Good work from Dan James, no communication to John Swift, he’s caught on his heels and the counterattack is on.

“Gnonto has burst forward to Piroe’s left. He needs to get his head up to release the pass and let Gnonto run at Semi Ajayi. Don’t shoot from there.”

Are Leeds United close to any new signings in the summer transfer window?

The first half at The Hawthorns summed up exactly what most supporters already knew about Leeds United. The Whites need some more attacking recruits if they want to challenge for automatic promotion this season.

Piroe was deployed in the ‘Georginio Rutter role’ as the Frenchman closes in on a summer transfer to Brighton [Florian Plettenberg, 17 August] but demonstrated neither the creativity nor attacking flair that is required in that position.

In the opening minutes of the half alone, the Dutchman overhit multiple passes to leave his teammates chasing lost causes and when he did have the opportunity to pick out Gnonto, he miscued a long-range effort instead.

The former Swansea man simply isn’t a number 10 and that is becoming more and more obvious. The 49ers need to back Farke in the final weeks of the transfer window so that he isn’t relying on him to start there.

If they don’t, they could well be risking their promotion push.

In other Leeds United news, the Whites’ stance on a summer transfer for Jack Clarke has been shared amid links with an Elland Road return

Wilfried Gnonto woeful after Leeds United moment v West Brom

Tony Brown has smashed into Wilfried Gnonto after Leeds United drew 0-0 against West Brom at The Hawthorns on August 17.

The BBC pundit labelled the Italian as “Woeful” as he fired a rare shot over the bar after creating space in the first half.

It was a frustrating afternoon for both sides with few clear-cut chances, but Daniel Farke will be happier with his defence than looking at the final third after a dreadful week.

Speaking live on BBC Radio WM [1:19 pm, 17 August], Brown was impressed with the winger until the final touch which ruined his hard work.

“Gnonto is annoyed with himself,” he said.

“He should have done better, it’s just outside the box there, he did a little dummy, and sent the Albion player the wrong way but the final shot was woeful.”

Wilfried Gnonto to stay at Leeds United?

With Crysencio Summerville gone and Georginio Rutter not far behind [], Gnonto has to take on the main man tag at Elland Road this season.

Although chances were not frequent at The Hawthorns, he was disappointed with himself for not at least hitting the target from the edge of the box.

Dan James, Mateo Joseph and Patrick Bamford didn’t even get the chance to have a shot in the entire 90 minutes, so that will need to be looked at by Farke.

It was clear that the Whites were on their travels with the main goal of damage limitation, something that did not go down well with the fans.

Not many will remember Gnonto striking over, or even the match entirely should results start to pick up fairly quickly, starting at Sheffield Wednesday next up.

The Whites are set to block any last-gasp exit for Gnonto [Give Me Sport], with an early window bid rejected from Everton to back that up [Nancy Froston].

Hopefully, things can start looking up quickly, it is needed.

In other Leeds United news, Jack Clarke transfer stance shared as Sunderland exit rumours rage on.
