‘Boring football’ Nasreddine Nabi’s tactics criticised by two-time PSL title winner with Kaizer Chiefs – ‘It goes to the leadership of the team, where they have to take charge’

The retired midfielder has lamented the lack of leadership in the current team and emphasized the need for them to take charge

    WHAT HAPPENED?

Kaizer Chiefs suffered their third PSL defeat of the 2024/25 season, losing 2-0 to Polokwane City on Sunday afternoon.

This result pushed Amakhosi out of the top eight, further highlighting their inconsistent start to the season. Former Chiefs player Willard Katsande expressed concerns about the team’s leadership and ability to handle pressure in crucial moments. Katsande emphasized the need for experienced players and smarter gameplay to avoid yet another trophyless season.

Chiefs’ current struggles paint a grim picture of their campaign, which is slipping further away from the expectations of their fans. If the team does not make immediate changes, they risk falling behind even more in the league standings.

    WHAT KATSANDE SAID

“In our era, we had international players. [Some] had just played the World Cup. We were surrounded by internationals. It’s not like the players are bad but maybe that they are lacking experience, where you need it in these kinda games,” Katsande said on SoccerBeat.

“Not every time you’re winning 2-0, you want to attack and play good football. Sometimes in our days, we used to put a third centre-back. From there, we play what they say it’s ‘boring’ football, but you look at the scoreboard. They need to learn quickly.

“It goes to the leadership of the team of the team, where they have to take charge. If you look at the past two games [before this past weekend], that’s what they needed, maximum points to get moving. The second round is difficult. You can’t let a lead slip like that,” he added.

“You can see that the hunger is there, but can we play with our heads? it’s not like you need to dominate 90 minutes, because that would be unfair in football.”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Kaizer Chiefs are now trailing log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates by 10 points after playing the same number of games. This gap is concerning, especially since Chiefs are not participating in continental competitions and should have fewer distractions.

To salvage their season, Amakhosi must string together consistent wins and close the gap at the top. Failing to do so will make it nearly impossible to challenge for the title. The urgency to improve grows with every passing fixture, as the team faces immense pressure to meet expectations.

    WHAT NEXT FOR CHIEFS?

Kaizer Chiefs will face TS Galaxy in their next league game. This match is crucial for Amakhosi to bounce back from their recent slump and regain momentum.

TS Galaxy has proven to be a resilient side, so Chiefs will need to bring their best performance to secure three points.

A victory in this fixture could help stabilize their season and restore some confidence within the squad.
