West Ham United are in serious trouble in the Premier League relegation battle after losing 2-0 against Crystal Palace on Saturday, according to Richard Keys.

A brace from Jean-Philippe Mateta saw the Eagles take all three points from the London Stadium on 18 January, with Konstantinos Mavropanos’ red card aiding their cause.

Reacting to the result inside the beIN Sports studio, Keys said that the Irons are “sinking” despite Graham Potter’s arrival.

“They [West Ham] are sinking, I think is the word”, Keys said on beIN Sports (18 January, 5:00 pm).

Gray was in agreement as he replied: “They are sinking.”

Seconds later, Gray asked Keys if he thinks one of Ipswich Town, Wolves and Everton will go down along with Leicester and Southampton, to which he replied: “West Ham have need to be very, very careful also.”

Gray, though, finds it hard to see the Hammers go down as they are 10 points above the relegation zone.

“Yes, but they are 10 points ahead, they’ve got a 10-point gap”, the former Everton and Wolves ace said.

In response, Keys said that it is very possible for Potter’s side to go down if they keep losing home games against teams like Palace.

“At the moment, they keep losing games like this”, the former Sky Sports commentator said.

Graham Potter to steer West Ham away from relegation zone

West Ham are, by no means, safe from relegation as they sit only 10 points above 18th-placed Ipswich.

However, Potter is the right man to take the East London outfit away from the relegation zone, having already earned a 3-2 win against Fulham since taking charge.

With the winter transfer window still open, the former Chelsea manager will be hopeful of adding at least one new player to his ranks for the second half of the season.

The Hammers should not have any trouble avoiding relegation if they sign a new centre-forward and a defender before the window slams shut on 3 February.

However, it remains to be seen if they can bring in those players in time as they are working on a tight budget after spending over £100million on new signings in the summer.

The fact that Wolves and Everton are already below West Ham give them some advantage in the relegation battle.
