“He didn’t sign for Kaizer Chiefs due to those two reasons”

Kaizer Chiefs had some wins in the recent transfer window, but they also had to deal with some losses.

Chiefs signed three players, adding experience to their squad as they look to improve their fortunes in 2025 and beyond.

Amakhosi went on to sign DRC international winger Glody Lilepo, striker Tashreeq Morris and Thabo Cele. The two forwards Lilepo and Morris were confirmed to have signed a 2-and-a-half year deals. While midfielder Cele, however, has signed a three-and-a-half year deal with Chiefs. One position they’re reportedly still trying to strengthen is the left back area.

    Chiefs tried to sign Mashego

At the start of the season, Chiefs added two left-backs to their squad. Bradley Cross and Bongani Sam both joined the club as they looked to revamp that position. Cross has not inspired the faithful with much confidence, while Sam is yet to play an official game for the club. Despite signing from arch rivals Orlando Pirates for R3 million, he was set to go on loan Magesi FC on loan. That deal then fell through, meaning he stays put. It could’ve all been so different for them, however, with a pursuit for Terrence Mashego.

This publication previously reported the reason for the failed pursuit. Now according to The Citizen, two more reasons prevented Mashego from joining Chiefs from Mamelodi Sundowns.

Two reasons it didn’t work out

“Management of Sundowns have always been clear that there needs to be players from the Mamelodi township in the team. They have a soft spot for him because of where he’s also coming from. If Chiefs were to convince Sundowns into selling Mashego, they needed to up their bid but they didn’t. These are the two reasons why the move didn’t happen but it’s true that Kaizer Chiefs were interested in Mashego and engaged Sundowns but unfortunately nothing materialised. I’m not sure if the player was keen on the move but Sundowns were not interested in letting him go if their asking price was not met.” Said a source to the same publication.
