Tottenham player ratings vs Ipswich Town as Brennan Johnson shines

We hand each Tottenham player a rating from 1-10 depending on their showing. Today, two Spurs stars shined brightest with 9/10 performances.

Guglielmo Vicario – 8 – Tottenham must be glad to have him back.

The Lilywhites could and should have been 1-0 down in the first few minutes, if not for two fantastic saves from Vicario.

He was solid throughout once again today, albeit a little hit-and-miss with the ball at his feet.

Djed Spence – 8.5 – Struggled defensively for the first few minutes on the right side, leaving Archie Gray a little isolated but soon grew into the game.

His quality on the ball really shone again in tight areas today as Spurs looked to play out from the back.

Deserved that goal, even if it was deflected. England call-up time?

Archie Gray – 7 – Couldn’t deal with the pace and power of Liam Delap in the opening 10 minutes and Spurs could have found themselves 2-0 down.

Eventually settled into the match but he is undoubtedly best with the ball at his feet.

The long-range pass that set Son away for the opener was proof of that.

Kevin Danso – 8.5 – Strange that Postecoglou switched Danso to the left side today, but the Austrian did a good job.

Saved a certain goal in the opening minutes when he tracked back onto the line and there weren’t many dangerous attacks that came down his side.

Delap was clearly focusing Gray over Danso.

Destiny Udogie – 8 – The Italian left-back looked like he’d never been away! In fact, that was one of his better performances all season. Udogie gave Spurs some much-needed drive and width down that left side, not to mention valuable fresh energy in a pretty fatigued squad.

Got in behind a fair few times with his pace and power – should only get better once his match sharpness returns.

Rodrigo Bentancur – 6.5 – A little hit-and-miss from the Uruguayan today.

On the one hand, he did his best to keep Tottenham ticking and broke the lines a couple of times with some smart driving runs.

On the other hand, he gave the ball away in some dangerous positions, which you can’t do in that lone role.

Lucas Bervall – 9 – He ran the show for large parts of this game in an all-action display. Unlike some of Spurs’ other central midfield options, he plays with his head up and isn’t afraid to take players on to open up new avenues of space. Went close to scoring from a Son pull-back. Seems to be growing every week.

Dejan Kulusevski – 6.5 – A similar performance to the last few weeks. Kulusevski looks tired, and who can blame him? I’m sure Postecoglou would have rested him if not for James Maddison picking up a knock against Man United.

He topped off a sloppy performance with a goal though, so you can’t complain.

Brennan Johnson – 9 – This is exactly what Brennan Johnson gives you.

Even when he’s having a quiet day and Spurs aren’t playing well, he takes up some great positions in the box and scores so many tap-ins purely from the timing of his late runs.

Having him in the XI brought the best out of Sonny too.

Mathys Tel – 6 – Really struggled with the physicality of Premier League centre-forward hold-up play, especially when compared with his counterpart, Liam Delap.

You get the sense that he would thrive more out wide for the time being, but this will be a steep learning curve for Tel.

Heung-min Son – 8.5 – Finally, Heung-min Son back to his best.

Spurs fans are accepting that Sonny may no longer be at his peak, but they at least want to see him front defenders up and take them on.

He did that for fun today, fizzing all kinds of dangerous crosses and shots in from the left side.

Two assists today and it could have been more. More of that, please Son!

James Maddison – 7 – Came on and set up Tottenham’s all-important third with some superb footwork.

Pedro Porro – 6 – Came on to give Udogie a rest and played out the win well.

Dane Scarlett – 6.5 – Postecoglou clearly trusts him and he repaid that with a flicked header to assist Dejan Kulusevski’s goal.

Wilson Odobert – 5 – Didn’t get too much of the ball during a longer cameo today.
