Paul Merson has revealed which team he believes has a better chance of winning the Europa League out of Tottenham and Manchester United.
Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United are see two of the Premier League sides who made it to the Europa League this season.
Both teams enjoyed a solid campaign, securing top-eight finishes in the League Phase and earning direct qualification to the round of 16.
The Lilywhites and the Red Devils had similar records in the Europa League group stage, with five wins each.
However, Manchester United remained unbeaten, with three draws, while Spurs drew twice and lost once, finishing fourth in the League, one spot below Manchester United.
Tottenham’s draw for the Europa League round of 16 has been made, and Ange Postecoglou’s men are set to face AZ Alkmaar, while Ruben Amroim’s team are set to face Real Sociedad.
Following the draw, Paul Merson has given his verdict on which Premier League side he thinks is capable of winning the Europa League.
He wrote on Sportskeeda, “Tottenham should go all in on winning the Europa League, if Spurs win it, they can get in the Champions League next season.
“The fans need to understand they will have to sacrifice some games in the league for them to win the Europa League and get back to playing with the big boys in Europe.
“There are not many great teams left in the Europa League and Tottenham definitely have a chance to win it. I can’t see how Manchester United are going to win that competition!”
Tottenham Hotspur’s road to the Europa League final
Tottenham’s road to the Europa League final is far from straightforward. Postecoglou’s side will have to make it past AZ Alkmaar in the round of 16, then one of Frankfurt or Ajax in the quarter-finals.
Should they make it past the quarters, then Lazio is their most likely semi-final opponent, in a game that will be tough.
However, Spurs’ chance of going all the way is high, given the return of their injured players. With the League now a dead rubber, Ange Postecoglou has to prioritise the Europa League.
