Tottenham are set to pass on their £8.5million option to buy Timo Werner this summer.

The German attacker, who first joined Tottenham on a six-month loan from RB Leipzig in January 2024 before the agreement was later extended for a further season, has scored just one goal in 27 appearances so far this term.

Werner made his return to action on Wednesday night in the 1-0 defeat to Manchester City after previously suffering a hamstring injury in the 3-0 FA Cup third-round victory at Tamworth in January.

However, regardless of what happens between now and the end of the season, sources close to Werner anticipate that he will be returning to Leipzig this summer before later considering his options.

There is tentative interest from MLS side New York Red Bulls but any deal is dependent not only on financials but whether the 28-year-old attacker is prepared to call time on his playing career in Europe.

Ange Postecoglou and the Tottenham hierarchy plan to bring in fresh forward reinforcements at the end of the season and Werner is not part of their long-term plans.

That was typified last weekend when despite Werner’s return to fitness, he was omitted from the match-day squad for the 4-1 win at Ipswich Town due to the stiff competition for places in north London.

Back in December, Werner’s below-par performance at Ibrox in the 1-1 Europa League draw at Rangers was labelled “unacceptable” by the Aussie amid the club’s gruelling injury struggles.

From that moment on, it was clear to see it was highly unlikely Spurs would be looking to trigger their option to sign the forward at the end of the season.

Postecoglou has already made it known that he expects Mathys Tel to be a Tottenham player beyond the summer following his loan switch from Bayern Munich.

Spurs have a £45.8m option to buy this summer that could rise to £50m with bonuses and the Frenchman can also play out wide as well as through the middle.

Richarlison’s future will also be reassessed at the end of the campaign following another difficult season battling various injury struggles.

The club’s midfield could also be subject to surgery in the transfer market while there may also be new arrivals in defence.
