Cheslin Kolbe says being recognised as the best player from the Republic in 2024 wouldn’t have been possible without a world champion Springbok team believing in him.
The two-time World Cup winner capped off a stellar season by being named SA Rugby Player of the Year in Cape Town on Thursday, becoming the first backline player since 2013 to claim the award. Speaking in a video interview, Kolbe reflected on the honour while acknowledging the team effort behind his success.
“Growing up and seeing all the players who have lifted this award has motivated me to one day do the same,” the speedster said. “Yes, my name will be on it, but 2024 was a team effort. I want to thank the coaches and my teammates for believing in me and allowing me to represent my country.”
Due to club commitments in Japan, the 31-year-old Kolbe could not attend the ceremony in his hometown, with his father Andrew accepting the award on his behalf.
Kolbe played a crucial role in the Springboks’ dominant season, which saw them win 11 of 13 Tests, reclaim the Rugby Championship and Freedom Cup and secure two victories over the All Blacks.
“You don’t play to get those accolades, and it’s not a one-man show. The team comes first,” he said. “But getting those nominations helps with your confidence if you want to put it that way. For me, it’s about being a better player in 2025 than what I’ve been last season.”
Looking ahead to 2025, Kolbe is eager to build on the momentum: “It’s going to be an exciting Test season. Those matches played in South Africa will be massive. The atmosphere and energy have just been unbelievable. We must ensure we are as excited as our supporters for this year.”
Kolbe topped an elite shortlist that included Eben Etzebeth, Pieter-Steph du Toit, Damian de Allende, and Ox Nche. SARU president Mark Alexander praised Kolbe’s achievement.
“Cheslin’s recognition is a testament to his skill, dedication, and impact on the field. He truly embodies the spirit of excellence that defines South African rugby,” Alexander said.
The awards night also celebrated Rassie Erasmus as Coach of the Year and the Boks as Team of the Year. Nadine Roos claimed her second SA Rugby Women’s Player of the Year award, while Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu was named Young Player of the Year.
Jurenzo Julius took Junior Springbok Player of the Year, and Selvyn Davids was recognised as Springbok Sevens Player of the Year.
In domestic rugby, Renzo du Plessis (Lions) and Ashlon Davids (Boland) won the Currie Cup Premier and First Division Player of the Year awards, respectively, while Sanele Nohamba (Lions) was named SA Vodacom URC Player of the Season.
Jakkie Cilliers (Bulls Daisies) was honoured as Provincial Women’s Player of the Year and AJ Jacobs received Referee of the Year.
