Currently struggling in 13th place in the Premier League and already eliminated from both domestic cup competitions, Spurs have endured a difficult season, leading to increasing speculation about whether Postecoglou will continue as manager beyond the summer.
Former Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe has now shed light on discussions that took place within the club before Postecoglou’s appointment.
According to him, some of the coaching staff had hoped to see Thomas Tuchel take the helm instead.
During his time working in Spurs’ academy, Defoe recalled conversations about Tuchel’s tactical expertise and rigorous coaching methods, with many believing he would have been a perfect fit for the club.
Even former Tottenham talisman Harry Kane was reportedly impressed by the German manager’s attention to detail and the intensity he brings to training sessions.
“I was in the Tottenham academy coaching for two years. Before Ange got the job, I had a conversation with some of the coaches.
“We were actually saying, ‘Cor, if we got Thomas Tuchel here’. Because we’d heard in terms of his detail and his coaching, even speaking to Harry (Kane), his sessions and the detail that he gives the players and the energy and what he brings to the job, he said it’s unbelievable. That’s what they say.”
Despite the admiration for Tuchel, it was Postecoglou who was ultimately chosen to lead the club in June 2023, making history as the first Australian to manage in the Premier League.
His early tenure was promising, as he guided Tottenham to an unbeaten start and won the league’s Manager of the Month award for three consecutive months.
However, injuries to key players significantly disrupted Spurs’ progress this season, causing a dip in form and leaving the club struggling to compete in the league.
With hopes of securing a top finish in the Premier League all but gone, the Europa League remains Tottenham’s last chance to salvage their season.
They are set to face Eintracht Frankfurt in the quarter-finals, and a strong run in the competition could boost Postecoglou’s case to remain in charge.
As the summer approaches, Spurs’ leadership must decide whether to give Postecoglou another season or seek new managerial options.
