But in any case, Spurs need to plan for next season as far as their playing squad goes, with more quality and depth required, while there is also the possibility some of their best players could be lured elsewhere, especially given how far Tottenham currently are from winning a significant title.
Ambitious players may want to go elsewhere to stand a chance of winning major titles, and there are already rumours that Romero could be Real Madrid’s answer at centre-back as they look to bolster the middle of their defence amid ageing players and players nearing the end of their contracts in that position.
If Romero does go, it will be for big money, and it seems as though Tottenham may be considering spending big to replace him if that does play out. According to Football Insider, Spurs are in the race for Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi, although they trail Liverpool currently.
Palace are likely to demand between £65million and £70million for Guehi this summer, which is a reduction on the £75million they demanded from Newcastle United last summer, with the defender heading towards the final year of his contract.
Liverpool would hold an obvious advantage, especially if Virgil van Dijk winds up leaving, but Spurs will want to stay in the race, at least until they can get some assurance over a Romero stay.
