Tottenham ‘to offer Romero £200,000-a-week contract’ amid transfer exit update

Cooking deal Tottenham could be set to offer Cristian Romero a contract worth £200,000-a-week after a big update on the defender’s future.

Romero recently returned to action after a long spell on the sidelines due to injury.

Following his comeback in the 2-2 Premier League draw with Bournemouth at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday 9 March, the centre-back aimed a subtle dig at Spurs’ medical staff.

It adds to the uncertainty around Romero’s long-term future in North London, with Real Madrid keeping tabs on the situation [TEAMtalk]

And it looks as though Spurs might be ready to pull out all the stops to keep hold of the 26-year-old, with an ultimatum now on the cards.

speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – has suggested that the North London club could offer Romero as much as £200,000-a-week to convince him to sign a new deal.

“Spurs will need to offer Romero the kind of money Son Heung-min is on,” King said.

“Therefore, I imagine that Tottenham will make an offer of around £200,000-a-week. Romero is a World Cup winner, and although he is a bit of a loose cannon at times, he is a world-class player and on his day he is as good as any centre-back in the country.

“The biggest problem with Romero is his consistency and injury record. However, if he is going to be offered a new contract, he is going to be very well-paid, let’s put it like that.”

Tottenham could be wise to cash in on Romero

While Spurs would benefit from keeping Romero, they could also benefit from moving him on.

If the player doesn’t really want to be at the club, now would be the time to cash in. Romero will have two years left on his contract this summer and his value will only decrease if Spurs don’t sell him.

Therefore, instead of convincing the player to stick around, Spurs might perhaps be wise to instead sell Romero and reinvest the money into a player who is committed to the club.
