The light blues were quickly on the scoreboard, latching onto an interception to score from just the second play of the match.

Their dominance in their defence was clear – repelling thunderous runs from Navy running back Keifer Blundell, while also seizing on opportunities to pick up and score from an opposition fumble, through Daniel Walkingshaw.

There were also clear signs of their potency through their own passing and rushing game in offence, Elliott Knight the beneficiary of a pinpoint pass early on in the match.

Well behind in the game, the Navy did respond through wide receiver Jordan Bernard, who duly received a pass from his quarterback and ran in from close range to get his side on the scoreboard.

However, as a stark reminder of the RAF’s control over the game, they came back straight away with a kickoff return touchdown – Lewis Truman gathered cleanly, taking advantage of some effective blocking in front of him, and stormed three-quarters of the field to score.

With a 38-6 deficit at half-time, the RAF then brought out another kickoff return TD – once again, Lewis Truman put on the afterburners to take the Mustangs further out of sight on the scoreboard.

Watch: RAF claims vital victory against Navy in Inter Services football openerRAF Captain, Ben Harris told BFBS Sport: “All forces sports have the new rookies that come in every year and a lot of the time in those experiences for those rookies – when games are tight and you’re trying to get them onto the pitch but they don’t necessarily get the time that they would hope and expect – but for this now because we were able to get the score up to a certain level, we were able to get every player on that side loaded on the pitch to earn their colours for this year.

“That’s a real big thing for me as the captain, I want to really promote that for the sport.”

The RAF are in a strong position in the tournament, but their showdown with the Army will have to wait until the autumn.
