Swansea City’s chances of beating Leeds United take a hit as key player is ‘touch and go’

Joining Leeds on loan in January 2008, Alan Sheehan signed a permanent deal that summer. But he would only go onto make a total of 24 appearances for Leeds, leaving the club three times to go on loan.

Well, on Saturday, Sheehan will return to Elland Road not as a player, but as Swansea’s interim manager after they sacked Luke Williams. The latter was in charge for Leeds’ injury-time 4-3 win over in Wales.

Sheehan will be in the dugout on Saturday as he looks to throw a spanner in the works for Leeds, who desperately need a win to stave off the pressure applied by both Sheffield United and Burnley.

Even more eagle-eyed Leeds fans will remember the name of Harry Darling. The defender gave the Welsh side the lead in November, before Manor Solomon netted a brace and Willy Gnonto scored a winner.

Darling has been a key player for Swansea, playing 33 of their 38 Championship games and even having a hand in five goals. The centre-back was a target for Sheffield United in January, according to The Star.

However, Darling has missed Swansea’s last two games after picking up a hip injury during the second half of a 1-0 win over Middlesbrough. Sheehan said Darling was “touch and go”, as per BBC Sport.

Handing Leeds a much-better chance of success on Saturday, Darling’s absence will be a big boost to Leeds not least because his quality at centre-back but due to his ability in both boxes from set-pieces.

Myles Peart-Harris has returned to Chelsea after picking up an injury that will see him miss the rest of the season, a big blow for Swansea. Kristian Pedersen has been missing since last August, a long-term issue.

But what Sheehan will be hoping for if Darling is unavailable, is the return of Hannes Delcroix who should be available for Swansea. However, losing Darling is a big blow for the Welsh side and Sheehan’s chances.

For Leeds, Ethan Ampadu, Patrick Bamford and Max Wober remain sidelined. In an even bigger blow, Gnonto could be out after returning early to Thorp Arch after suffering an ankle injury with Italy’s U21’s.
