Springboks Shake-Up: Rassie Erasmus Calls Up Stormers Star Amid Injury Scare!

Springbok head coach Rassie Erasmus has made a bold squad adjustment, drafting in Stormers powerhouse Evan Roos ahead of a jam-packed international season. This sudden move comes as questions swirl around the fitness of Bulls back-row sensation Cameron Hanekom, who suffered a worrying injury over the weekend.

Roos, who last featured for the Boks in 2024, returns after a lengthy shoulder injury layoff. His inclusion sparks speculation that he could be stepping in for Hanekom, who was carted off the field following a heavy collision during the Bulls’ clash with the Sharks — a moment that left fans and coaches visibly concerned.

Although Hanekom hasn’t officially been ruled out, Bulls coach Jake White hinted at a potential long recovery, dampening hopes of his immediate return. The Springbok squad begins camp in Johannesburg this week, with players arriving in waves due to club commitments in the URC and Premiership finals.

South Africa’s season kicks off on June 28 with a historic showdown against the Barbarians in Cape Town — the first-ever between the sides on home soil. They’ll then face Italy twice and Georgia in the Castle Lager Incoming Series.

With the squad in flux and big matches looming, all eyes are now on Roos. Is this his shot at redemption — or just a temporary stand-in?

Don’t miss a beat — the Springboks’ journey is just getting started.
