Following the Brisbane Lions’ gutsy Round 9 win at Marvel Stadium, head coach Chris Fagan took a moment away from tactics and team stats to deliver heartfelt praise for one player in particular — Will Ashcroft.

The 20-year-old midfielder, who returned this season from a devastating ACL injury suffered in 2023, delivered one of his most complete performances of the year, showcasing not just skill, but heart, maturity, and relentless effort.

“He’s a special young man,” Fagan said post-match. “The way he worked to get back to this level says everything about his character — he’s a leader already.”

    A Comeback Rooted in Character
Ashcroft finished the game with 28 disposals, 7 clearances, and 5 tackles, but it was his composure and clean decision-making under pressure that caught attention from fans and commentators alike.

What makes his rise even more impressive is the journey he’s taken since injury. From surgery and rehab to doubts about returning at full pace, Ashcroft has answered every challenge with quiet determination.

“He never complained. He never made excuses. He just showed up — every day — and did the work,” Fagan added.Mature Beyond His Years
Though still early in his AFL career, Ashcroft is being seen as a future captaincy candidate. Senior players have privately noted his attention to detail, drive, and the way he speaks in team meetings.

Veteran teammate Hugh McCluggage also praised Ashcroft recently:

“He holds himself to high standards — and he holds us there too. It’s rare in someone so young.”

With the Lions still fighting for consistency in the 2025 season, Ashcroft’s continued growth could prove pivotal. As the team eyes a finals push, the return of his midfield dynamism may be exactly what Brisbane needs to rediscover their rhythm.
