A seasoned Sharks scrumhalf has penned a deal with third division French side Narbonne as he looks to reignite his career in Europe.
EPCR Challenge Cup winner, Cameron Wright – who previously had stints at Montpellier and Oyonnax – returns to Europe with a point to prove and a burning desire to be part of a team with “an ambitious project”.
“I was looking for a team with vision, and after speaking to [Narbonne sporting director] Charles Malet, it was clear that the project at Narbonne matched what I was looking for,” said Wright.
“I know French rugby from my time at Montpellier and Oyonnax. At this stage of my career, I want a fresh challenge, and this is a place where rugby really means something.”
Wright, who hails from Westville in Durban, enjoyed a solid career with the Sharks, where he became known for his intelligent kicking game, high-tempo distribution and vocal leadership. While he never cracked the Springbok squad, Wright’s professionalism and adaptability earned him plenty of respect in the South African rugby scene.
He becomes one of the more high-profile recruits in Narbonne’s off-season rebuild, as the once-proud French club looks to return to the Pro D2 under the guidance of sporting manager Jacques Delmas.
Fluent in French and familiar with the local culture, Wright says he’s looking forward to making Narbonne his home for the next chapter of his career, and is excited about the rugby and lifestyle the region offers.
Wright joins six other new recruits, and his addition at No 9 is seen as vital in reshaping the club’s identity and on-field ambitions.
