Celtic and Rangers fans would put cities ‘under siege’ as ex Aberdeen chief claims Premier League move would be disaster
Former Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness claims the Old Firm joining the English Premier League would be a DISASTER and says cities south of the border would be “under siege” if it ever did happen.
There has been much discussion about Celtic and Rangers, especially during Wyness’s tenure at Pittodrie from 2000 to 2004. But it was a war he would never give up, even when he was on the other side and played in the English premier league for both Everton and Aston Villa.
A two-tier league consisting of 36–40 teams, including the Glasgow giants, was proposed by the late Phil Gartside, the chairman of Bolton Wanderers, but it was rejected by the English Premier League in 2009. And Wyness tells Football Insider that it’s a total non-starter 25 years later, saying, “In my opinion, it would be a disaster. People don’t realise the issues the fanbases would have coming down here. Cities would be under siege for weekend games.
“It would be a real problem. Never say never, but I really can’t see them coming. In my days at Aberdeen, I was fighting this battle. We resigned from the Scottish Premier League, leaving Rangers and Celtic alone. We won that battle in terms of getting a fairer share of TV revenue.
