In 15 attempts Pascal Chimbonda only won twice against Arsenal. When playing for Tottenham that number was just one from nine.
The recent record of six wins in 15 is certainly stronger but it has been nearly two years since the last Spurs victory in North London Derbies. That was a huge 3-0 with both sides going for fourth spot and Champions League qualification.
The 2-2 draw earlier this season was one of the most entertaining, and at the time anticipated with Ange Postecoglou’s side top of the table at the end of September. Now, the stakes are even bigger.
Defeat for either side would be a monumental blow to their aspirations of lifting the Premier League or securing a top-four spot place. Missing out for both managers would be just more than losing bragging rights.
Even if the gap between the teams in terms of points is larger than Tottenham would like, coming from a comprehensive set of results in these fiery derby clashes last season, there has been great improvement. With an exciting style of football and new blood added to the squad, Postecoglou has won the hearts of many.
He has previously managed an exciting point away to Manchester City, so defeating Arsenal would be his biggest scalp to yet.Meanwhile, Mikel Arteta is trying to overcome the intense environment and get up to the top of the table where he can increase his lead.
However, Chimbonda is aware of who he would prefer to represent. “I think that, of the two managers, I’d prefer play for Ange Postecoglou,” he said, standing in front of the North London Derby mural at Ladbrokes Fanzone.
“You know, as an ex-Spurs player, I wouldn’t want to go and play for Arsenal!” the former Blackburn and Wigan midfielder continued. I don’t want to alienate Spurs supporters since I am aware of how intense that rivalry is! I’d also rather play for Postecoglou because, in my opinion, he allows you the freedom to enjoy the game when you’re out on the field.”
