Ange set to unleash ‘secret weapon’ against Chelsea

Tottenham could unleash teenage sensation loved by Ange Postecoglou against Chelsea

The Premier League match between Tottenham and Chelsea on Thursday would be the ideal setting for Ange Postecoglou to let loose with highly-regarded young player Mikey Moore. The winger has been practicing with Postecoglou’s first squad and might soon be playing competitive senior football. He is considered among the top-flight’s greatest prospects in the academy.

Had it not been for two serious injuries, Moore’s promotion into the Spurs lineup might have occurred earlier in the season. The 16-year-old sustained a shattered leg at the beginning of the season. He later strained his ankle ligaments, which prevented him from playing for a while.

Moore has made 14 appearances for Spurs’ U18 team and scored an astounding 16 goals despite his injury setbacks. In addition, he has nine assists, proving that his injury-plagued campaign has not been a complete loss.

Moore only turned 16 on the eve of the Premier League season – and of Harry Kane’s move to Bayern Munich. But an impressive season could see him make his senior bow over the coming weeks.

A hamstring injury suffered by Timo Werner, which will keep the German out for the rest of the season, may open a space for Moore to feature in the matchday squad for the visit to Chelsea. The academy star has travelled with his senior colleagues for several games but has yet to make an appearance on the substitutes’ bench.

Spurs are also at a disadvantage in their race for Champions League football, sitting seven points behind Aston Villa. Postecoglou’s side have two games in hand over the Villans – but now could be the chance to give academy players a chance with less pressure on their final five matches.

“Mikey has been really good. Look, he’s a very talented boy and for him, he’s had a fairly disrupted season, he’s had a couple of injuries,” Postecoglou said of Moore last week.

“When he’s performed, he’s performed really well. The reports I’ve had on him have always been outstanding. It’s been good to have him.

“Obviously, it’s been a few weeks since we played, so having him back with the first team has been beneficial. To be fair, he has adjusted quite well; he hasn’t appeared out of place, and this is fantastic for him. I hope it inspires him and some of the other guys who are making progress.”

Moore, who can also operate as an attacking midfielder or striker, would be making his senior football debut against Chelsea, which would be an amazing introduction. Spurs suffered a 4-1 loss in the rematch of the fiercely fought London derby, which saw them given two red cards.

Werner’s hamstring injury against Arsenal left him with only Brennan Johnson, Richarlison, and Bryan Gil as viable replacements.
