“It means so, so, so much,” said Lars after sharing news of Torben’s death at age 95 last month
Lars Ulrich is feeling the love for his late father, Torben Ulrich.
The Metallica drummer, 60, posted to social media on Dec. 20 to share news of his father’s death at age 95 before posting a sweet message on New Year’s Eve thanking fans for their support following the loss.
“95 years of adventures, unique experiences, curiosity, pushing boundaries, challenging the status quo, tennis, music, art, writing….and quite a bit of Danish contrarian attitude,” wrote Lars alongside several photos of Torben, who was a professional tennis player as well as musician, writer and filmmaker.
“Thank you endlessly! I love you dad,” concluded the rocker’s post.
Many Metallica fans then took to the post’s comments section to share their support for the rock star and express appreciation for Torben’s life and legacy.
“Name another father of the drummer of a band who every diehard fan of that band knows. You can’t,” wrote one Instagram user. “What a true legend and undeniable badass. Only a guy like that could create the kid that changed the world of music forever. Cheers.”
Several fans referenced a hilarious clip from the Metallica documentary Some Kind of Monster where Torben sits in on one of Lars’ recording sessions, hears him perform a take and says, “Delete that.”
“Sorry for your loss Lars. RIP to a great man. ‘Delete that’ – probably one of his most famous quotes among fans,” commented another Instagram user.
On Dec. 31, Lars posted another photo of his father to social media and gave thanks to his followers for sharing their thoughts and memories of Torben.
“Since my dad’s passing 10 days ago, there has been an unexpected influx of condolences, messages, stories and testimonies coming my way about how his life impacted and affected so many people in a variety of different ways,” wrote Lars. “It’s honestly blown me away.”
He continued, “As you can imagine it’s been quite a surreal time, so let me say from the heart how much I truly appreciate every single thought, sentiment, feeling and emotion you’ve kindly taken the time to share with me.”
“It means so, so, so much,” concluded Lars’ post. “Thank you, thank you, thank you…”
Torben’s cause of death is currently unknown.
