West Brom penetrating up to the end of transfer window

West Brom penetrating up to the end of transfer window

This summer will remain an extremely busy time for Carlos Corberan and Albion’s recruitment team – with the search for players set to continue until deadline day.

Barnsley midfielder Callum Styles is expected to leave this summer following a bid from West Brom and interest from Birmingham City.

The Hungary international is reportedly set to depart Oakwell Stadium, bringing an end to his eight-year stay in South Yorkshire.

Styles, who has played 23 times at a senior level for Hungary, was the subject of a failed bid from West Bromwich Albion two weeks ago, as per Sky Sports. Meanwhile, journalist Alan Nixon reported in July that fellow West Midlands side Birmingham City held an interest.

In a more recent update, Barnsley Chronicle reports Styles is “very likely to leave the club” and could be set for a move back to the English second tier. It’s claimed “negotiations have reached an advanced stage” with a Championship team, perhaps putting a proper end to Birmingham’s tenuous links.

nothing concrete suggests that West Brom are the side mentioned. It’s a complicated situation as Barnsley are keen to acquire a striker plus cash in exchange for Styles, who is otherwise understood to have a release clause of £2 million. With less than a year left on his contract, that would be a significant fee.

Styles, who has played 151 times for Barnsley since joining from Bury in 2018, faces an uncertain end to the transfer window. “One minute it’s close, the next minute it’s not,” manager Darrell Clarke told Barnsley Chronicle.

“It’s not doing the lad any favours mentally. For me, it’s part of football management and you have to adapt. If something manoeuvres, it manoeuvres. We understand where we’re both coming from. I won’t cold-shoulder him,” Clarke admitted.

Capable of playing pretty much anywhere in midfield or even as a wing-back, Styles will be a versatile option for any potential suitor. The 24-year-old will be keen to return to form wherever he goes, bouncing back from a failed loan at Sunderland where he played just 808 minutes.

Leeds United face West Brom in Saturday’s lunchtime kick-off at the Hawthorns in their second Championship game of the season.

Leeds United will have to bounce back from being unceremoniously dumped out of the Carabao Cup. The Whites lost 3-0 to Middlesbrough in front of a 35,000+ crowd as they put in a sobering display of football that left a lot to be desired.

Further disappointment for fans came after the game when it emerged that Brighton had triggered the £40m release clause in Georginio Rutter’s deal.

Daniel Farke will need to change his line-up after admitting in his pre-West Brom presser – covered by the Yorkshire Evening Post – that Rutter is as good as gone. The enigmatic forward has said emotional goodbyes to staff and players at the West Yorkshire club

Leeds United were uninspiring in a hectic 3-3 draw in their Championship opener against Portsmouth.

What is for certain, Leeds will need to take their efforts up many levels from Wednesday’s display against Michael Carrick’s Boro side.

    Leeds United team news

Leeds United have a very small first-team squad, so injuries will severely test their limited depth. Beyond the senior squad, reinforcements will need to come from their U23s at the moment.

Of course, the biggest name missing for the Whites today will be wantaway star man Rutter. Whilst he made himself available for the Middlesbrough game, he’s unlikely to feature against the Baggies.

Other than that, Farke has pretty much a full-strength squad to pick from. His only likely absentee is Austrian defender, Max Wober.

On Wober, the Leeds United boss said in his presser: “The medical department are doing a fantastic job and it seems everyone is available expect maybe Max Wober with a calf injury.

Aside from Brenden Aaronson’s inclusion to cover the absence of Brighton-bound Rutter, it will be the same starting XI that faced Portsmouth at Elland Road.

Pascal Struijk and Joe Rodon will need to tighten things up at the centre of defence. The Portsmouth and Middlesbrough games have shown that Leeds have been too easy to get at. In fact, that goes also for the Whites’ full-backs who cannot forsake their defensive duties.
