Kaizer Chiefs head coach Nasreddine Nabi has explained the reasons behind Yusuf Maart’s inconsistent performances
Kaizer Chiefs captain Yusuf Maart surprised his critics with superb performances last week. Coach Nasreddine Nabi has explained the reasons for his inconsistency.
Speaking to the media after Amakhosi’s 2-2 draw against Royal AM last weekend, where Maart delivered another fine performance after his Man of the Match display against Richards Bay last Tuesday, coach Nabi said criticism from fans had hindered the 29-year-old Kaizer Chiefs career.
“Yes, I think this is a problem for confidence, for himself,” Nabi said via FARPost.
“Yusuf sometimes receives too many attacks. It’s difficult, mentally it’s difficult,” said Nabi after the match.
“I think the last game, and today, it’s not bad. He gave an excellent performance. Today, I think he gave a good performance.
“I want to see more confidence for himself, and he continues to progress,” the Kaizer Chiefs tactician added.
MISSED OPPORTUNITY TO SIGN RELEBOHILE MOFOKENG
A popular photographer once encouraged Kaizer Chiefs scouts to come and watch Relebohile Mofokeng when he was 13 years old.
Speaking on Mawara Sports Worldwide (MSW) last week, the leading sports photographer Pitsi ‘Vino’ Matlou recalled discovering Mofokeng in Gauteng’s Vaal Triangle. According to Matlou, he called Kaizer Chiefs scouts to come over to Sharpville to watch Mofokeng but missed the opportunity.
Mofokeng later joined the School of Excellence Academy before Orlando Pirates spotted him ahead of his 17th birthday. The youngster became a bright star in the DStv Diski Challenge team before coach Jose Riveiro gave him his first team debut against Royal AM in May 2023.
“With Rele, I first spotted him, I think he was 13, I remember calling some of the scouts at Kaizer Chiefs to say, ‘Hey, guys you need to come to Sharpeville, there’s this young boy here doing magi,’” Vino said on MSW, as quoted by Soccer Laduma.
“Fast forward it’s 2022, he’s at School of Excellence but I’m hosting a tournament and one of the teams invited him. Fast forward I’m seeing talent I’ve never seen before.
“Even on my posts, I told them I’m seeing the prime Thulani Serero in this kid. So ‘my people in football, please come do something with this boy.’ Our relationship [with Mofokeng] is good. I’m a supportive person, Rele doesn’t owe me anything. I did that through my own will. Seeing him do what he’s doing now makes me really happy,” Vino added.
