Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro won’t take credit for Kaizer Chiefs star Mfundo Vilakazi.
Kaizer Chiefs star Mfundo Vilakazi played his first minutes of senior football under Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro last year.
Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro will get his second game in charge of the All Stars this afternoon.
Riveiro will lead players from a variety of different clubs to battle against Magesi FC who won the Carling Knockout Cup.
Magesi earned their ticket to this once off game after shocking Mamelodi Sundowns in the competition with a 2-1 victory. Last season Riveiro was able to lead the All Stars to a victory over Stellenbosch FC. The Pirates mentor will now be looking to defend the crown with his current crop of players.
Vilakazi played under Riveiro last year
Last season, one of the most anticipated players was Kaizer Chiefs youngster Mfundo Vilakazi. Still a DDC player at the time, Riveiro gave him his first taste of senior football. He then didn’t disappoint, scoring a free kick to set things off. He would then go on to make his senior debut at Amakhosi and is now a permanent member of the side. Speaking to the media, the Pirates mentor refuses to take credit for giving the player exposure.
“I think you have to contextualise that situation… Mfundo (Vilakazi) was there first because the people were voting for him to be there, it’s not a coach selection, it could be nice for me to say that, or follow that story [that I was there when it all started]. The reality is that Mfundo was there because people voted for him, he was on the field because the people wanted him to be there and I think the boy answered [them] in a really good manner on the day.” Riveiro said on the Chiefs star as per iDiski Times.
The Pirates mentor then gave a progress report on Vilakazi at Chiefs.
Pirates coach refuses to take credit!
“He managed to show that he’s an interesting player. He’s a reality right now in his team and as a young player, I wish him all the best. He’s a good source of inspiration for the young players to have the motivation to go on the field on Saturday… especially to be themselves. Not trying to be Vilakazi or Mofokeng. They have to be themselves, show the players they are and hopefully they can have a good day.” Said Riveiro.
