The Philadelphia Eagles are Super Bowl champs and Friday they celebrated with a parade through the city.
Typically, for championship teams that means there is just one more day of celebration — an eventual trip to the White House.
But the Eagles visiting Donald Trump is not a given.
The team was slated to visit Trump and the White House following the team’s Super Bowl win in 2018, but that trip got cancelled at the last minute, and Trump didn’t hold back when explaining his side of that.
“The Philadelphia Eagles are unable to come to the White House with their full team to be celebrated tomorrow,” Trump said back then. “
They disagree with their President because he insists they proudly stand for the National Anthem, hand on heart, in honor of the great men and women of our military and the people of our country.
“The Eagles wanted to send a smaller delegation, but the 1,000 fans planning to attend the event deserve better,” he added. “These fans are still invited to the White House to be a part of a different type of ceremony – one that will honor our great country, pay tribute to the heroes who fight to protect it, and loudly and proudly play the National Anthem.
I will be there at 3:00 p.m. with the United States Marine Band and the United States Army Chorus to celebrate America.”
There has been a lot of roster turnover in the seven years since Philly declined the invite, but there are still some key veterans on the roster, and it sounds like it could be a toss-up as to whether or not they might attend this time around.
“I’d be honored to go, regardless of who the president is, but we’ll see,” team captain Lane Johnson said after the Super Bowl.
“It’s ultimately a team decision. I’ll do what’s best for the team.”
Josh Sweat reportedly said the White House invite is “a great honor.”
“But I’m looking forward to this (Super Bowl) parade more than anything,” he added.
Fans o
seemed convince the Eagles would decline the invite again.
We will see if they even get the invite to decline.
