What ‘new Rangers manager’ has previously said about US takeover and San Francisco 49ers

Barry Ferguson looks to be in line for a stunning return to Rangers following the sacking of manager Philippe Clement.

Reports have suggested that Ferguson is set to replace Clement as caretaker manager until the end of the season after the Belgian was relieved of his duties at Rangers.

Barry Ferguson is one of the most decorated players in Rangers’ history but has only managed in the Scottish Lower Leagues on a full-time basis.

With the Rangers legend set to come in and steady the ship, it will make a big change from the ex-Scotland captain’s duties on the Scottish punditry circuit.

Barry Ferguson on US takeover of Rangers

Barry Ferguson has been outspoken on a number of subjects surrounding Rangers as the club experiences a domestic downturn in recent seasons.

The former Rangers captain, 47, knows what it means to play for the shirt and would certainly demand no nonsense standards from the off in the Ibrox dressing room.

But should the deal go through to bring Ferguson to Ibrox, it will come just days after the Rangers legend gave his two cents on a proposed takeover in Glasgow.

Rangers are in advanced discussions with the investment group behind the San Francisco 49ers with American money set to sweep the changes through Ibrox.

Whilst Ferguson may well be in charge when the Americans takeover, there’s no guarantee Barry will still be on the sideline next season.

But the former Ibrox midfielder reckons the incoming investment may be the chance to ‘Make Rangers Great Again’.

“I’m trying my best not to get carried away, but it’s difficult,” an excited Ferguson told the Daily Record.

“I’ve had the feeling that this might be the chance to ‘Make Rangers Great Again’.

“It’s felt like very dark days for Rangers and their supporters.

You’re constantly asking yourself; ‘How on earth are we ever going to be competitive again?’.

And then, all of a sudden, this story drops out of the sky and the answer to the question is staring you right in the face.”

Barry Ferguson hopes to Make Rangers Great Again

Barry Ferguson also reckons that the recent upturn at Leeds United is evidence that 49ers Enterprises can have a big impact at Rangers.

The US consortium has a controlling stake in the Championship club and Ferguson insists the American’s approach is precisely what’s needed in Glasgow’s southside.

The Rangers legend has also given his full backing to the club’s new potential overlords and reckons the takeover could be crucial to closing the gap with eternal rivals Celtic.

”The evidence is there,” explains Ferguson. “They saw Leeds as a huge club that had fallen on hard times by dropping out of the English top flight.

“So they have picked them up, put some serious money behind them and now they’re looking in a very strong position to return to the Premier League.

“It’s not been a case of reckless spending either. They haven’t thrown ridiculous amounts at it in the hope of buying their way back up.

“No, they have been rebuilding Leeds from the ground up. Yes, they have spent big in Championship terms because they have the financial resources to do so.

But it’s been sensible stuff. It’s been well thought through. And, quite clearly, it’s been working.

“That’s exactly the kind of approach Rangers need right now – owners with deep pockets and smart minds.

“If any investor wants to maximise their returns, it means getting into the Champions League.

And that means knocking Celtic off their perch. That’s certainly music to my ears and I’m pretty sure almost all my fellow fans out there will be feeling the same way.

“It’s time to Make Rangers Great Again. Let’s hope these are the people who really can make it happen.”
