Spurs will face Eintracht Frankfurt in the last eight while Bodo/Glimt or Lazio will meet Spurs or Frankfurt in the semi-finals. The likes of Manchester United or Rangers could play Spurs in the final in a potential all-British clash.

Postecoglou reacts to victory with Odobert praise

Speaking after the game, the Spurs boss said: “We’ve progressed which is the main thing, played pretty well as well. I thought we were really in control of the game, we’re our own worst enemy at times. When we were in control, we let them back in the game and it was nervy at end but we thoroughly deserved to win.

“We scored a great goal from the press and started the second half really well, really should’ve put the tie away in the first 15/20 minutes but super pleased for the boys.”

Postecoglou also reserved some praise for his centre-backs and matchwinner Odobert. He added: “[Cristian] Romero and Micky [Van de Ven] make such a big difference to us and you saw Wilson [Odobert], we’ve hardly had him this year, what a super talent he is.”

    Van de Ven ‘really happy’

Centre-back Micky van de Ven started the game but was withdrawn after 60 minutes as Postecoglou looks to protect his fitness. He only featured for 30 minutes in the 2-2 draw with Bournemouth and revealed the mood in the Spurs dressing room is high as they look to put their difficult season behind them by aiming to win the Europa League.

He said: “I’m really happy, a great team performance and we’re through to the next round and that’s the main thing. We’ve not had an easy season this season, so it’s really good to win this round. The atmosphere in the dressing room was really good. We play against a difficult opponent, Frankfurt, it’s going to be really difficult but we know our quality, at home we’re a really strong team.

“I haven’t played for a long time, on the weekend I played 30. today I played 60, so hopefully I can kick on from this. It was really nice to be next to Cuti [Romero] again, he’s a top player of course. We showed from the first minute that we wanted to win the game in the 90 minutes.”
