But according to Give Me Sport, Tottenham have now entered the picture, and it’s claimed there have been ‘lengthy conversations’ as the North London club look to steal a march on their London rivals.
The four-time England international was always likely to be an attractive prospect this summer given how he has proved himself since leaving United and making more than 100 league appearances for Lille over the last four years.
Meanwhile, Tottenham do need more depth in most areas of their squad, and so their interest does make sense.
West Ham may need to step up their game and dust off the chequebook if they want to win the race to sign a rare England international free agent.
After all, it was always going to be a case of spending big on wages to win the race given there will be no fee involved, and Gomes’ representatives will be well aware of that, with increased interest helping their client increase his future earnings.
