Given his admission of surprise at Nottingham Forest’s £50 million asking price, Darren Bent obviously thinks Tottenham Hotspur is in serious danger of overpaying for Brennan Johnson.

The Wales international is expected to be signed by Tottenham in the last moments of the summer transfer season, Bent said on talkSPORT after learning of the situation.

From the outside, it does seem more and more likely that Brennan Johnson will leave before the deadline. Additionally, talkSPORT writer Alex Crook claimed that Tottenham and Forest are in talks regarding a transfer for the 22-year-old.

Crook stated that Forest is seeking £50 million for the forward. And that elicited a sharp response from former Tottenham striker Bent, who said that it is a high price to pay for the teenager at this point in his career.

Bent surprised as Tottenham consider £50 million spend on Brennan Johnson

“£50m? Amazing [head shakes]. He will cost £50 million. Although he is a talented player, Bent told talkSPORT that there were occasions during the previous season when Steve Cooper left him off the lineup and the team continued to play.
“Aren’t you saying that’s a lot of money?

Crook responded, “I do, but you pay that premium for British players.” Conor Gallagher will cost Chelsea £50 million to sell, so have a look at them. A further £50 million will be spent on Trevoh Chalobah. Nearly nothing else can be done but accept it.

Making a play for Johnson at that cost is undoubtedly a gamble. His debut season in the Premier League was incredibly outstanding, and he did more than just fulfill Steve’s expectations.

However, Tottenham’s offensive prowess is not a problem. The person who can score a lot of goals is what they actually need to bind the offense together.

It is still up to Richarlison to demonstrate his suitability for the position. The majority of Johnson’s performances as a center striker were less impressive than when he was operating off the front.

It’s possible that this is a move that doesn’t benefit Tottenham. Having said that, it is already abundantly evident what Ange Postecoglou can do when he recognizes a player’s potential.

And if Postecoglou is particularly eager for Johnson to join the team, it is clear that he believes he can assist Johnson in realizing his full potential in the years to come.

At that price, he might be a fantastic signing if everything clicks.
