Ange Postecoglou has provided an explanation for the starting lineup he chose for the Premier League matchup with Wolves. With Postecoglou giving Eric Dier his first league start, Spurs will be without Micky van de Ven, Cristian Romero, Destiny Udogie, and James Maddison for the match at Molineux.
With Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Pape Matar Sarr, and Yves Bissouma in the midfield trio and the same front three as the attackers, Pedro Porro, Emerson Royal, and Ben Davies flank him in the defense four.Though Postecoglou has chosen to back what will probably be viewed as the safe bets, players like Giovani Lo Celso, Bryan Gil, Rodrigo Bentancur, and Ashley Phillips were suggested to start.
Postecoglou responded, “It was an easy decision, because they’re the only available defenders we have.” referring to his selection of defense.
What a difficult week it has been. Ben is back to full fitness, Pedro [Pedro] and Vic [Guglielmo Vicario] were there last week, and Emerson has been fantastic for us this year in a few different situations. I also thought Eric performed well when he last appeared.
“Emile Hojbjerg, who has performed so well for us this year, is clearly not Madders [James Maddison], but rather a different player. Our preferred style of football is subject to change as new players join the team and contribute their own attributes. We put in a lot of effort this week to ensure that we keep our faith in our football, and that is what we’ll attempt. Pierre has distinct talents.”
The absence of Maddison and van de Ven, two players who are essential to Postecoglou’s style of play, notwithstanding, the Spurs manager has vowed to stick to his guns. “We shouldn’t [alter our style], but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t, in my opinion. The skills and personalities that each player contributes to a club are unique, but the type of team and football we want to play remain constant.
“So coming here today we are going to play our football that people have watched so far and hopefully get even stronger and the individuals within that will make adjustment that bring their football to our team.”
