‘Massive’: Tottenham and Leeds deals now reach final stage as star gives major thumbs up to switch

Tottenham and Leeds transfer given green light as star gives major thumbs up to switch

After making a suggestion that Joe Rodon might be making a permanent move to Leeds, Tottenham defender Ben Davies says he is happy to see the player back playing regularly.

After Jose Mourinho gave Swansea an initial payment of about £11 million to acquire the Wales international, Rodon moved to Tottenham back in October 2020. Despite making only 24 appearances for the team—just 15 of which were in the Premier League—the 26-year-old has struggled to make a name for himself in north London.

Rodon, who spent the previous season on loan at Rennes in France, came back to Spurs during the summer in search of a new opportunity to make an impression. Nevertheless, Leeds United intervened to sign the defender on a season-long loan after Ange Postecoglou made room for the defender to depart once more. After losing captain Liam Cooper to injury during the opening day of the season during a 2-2 draw with Cardiff, the Whites made the decision to sign the center-half.

Although Rodon started the season as a substitute in a disappointing 1-0 loss to Birmingham, he was given his opportunity in a 4-3 victory at Ipswich towards the end of August, and the Wales international has been a mainstay in the team ever since.

In fact, having appeared in 13 games overall and assisting the team in starting a run of six victories in their previous seven contests, Rodon has established himself as one of the first names on Farke’s roster at Elland Road.

With a 2-1 victory over Plymouth on Saturday, in which Rodon was named Man of the Match, Farke’s team has surged up the Championship table. The gap with Leicester, which at one point last week could have reached 17 points, has shrunk to just eight points.

According to some reports, Postecoglou’s team may try to bring Rodon back to the team in January as they currently face a defensive injury crisis.

Rodon is scheduled to stay in West Yorkshire for the duration of the season, so it has been confirmed that the agreement does not include a recall clause.

There has also been discussion that Leeds may try to negotiate the 26-year-old’s permanent transfer if the chance presents itself, even though Leeds did not negotiate a permanent move option.

In any case, Davies, who plays alongside Rodon for both Tottenham and the Wales national team, has enthusiastically endorsed his transfer to Elland Road.

Joe Rodon believes Spurs team-mate Ben Davies will become a manager and that he's the 50-50 king - football.london

Regarding Rodon’s move, Davies told Wales Online, “It is difficult.” People occasionally underestimate how difficult it is to relocate every nine months to a new location. However, it appears that he has settled down in Leeds.

Although Davies would not comment on whether Leeds would sign Rodon long-term, he acknowledged that he was happy to see his close friend succeeding in West Yorkshire and implied that it would not come as a surprise if the move turned into a permanent one.

Joe plays the game very well. He always provides a strong foundation, is adept with the ball, and I believe our communication is strong. I play with him for Wales. It truly brings me joy to witness his success at Leeds.

We chat a lot because Joe is one of my closest football friends. He is the kind of player who can play really well at defense and is currently demonstrating that, in my opinion, when he is in a position where he feels appreciated and is having a good run of games.

Price tag on permanent Rodon move emerges

Regarding whether he should move to Leeds, Davies maintains that the 37-time Wales cap star did not consult with him.

Nevertheless, he acknowledges that he is happy to see him succeeding and that he is at a “massive” club in Leeds.

It wasn’t necessary for him to talk to me, Davies continued. In my opinion, going there was a fantastic opportunity. He had no doubt that he would travel there, play a lot of football, and play for a sizable team that had playoff aspirations. He’s off to a great start and seems to be having fun.

Rodon’s Tottenham contract is currently scheduled to expire in the summer of 2025, which means that by the time his Leeds loan expires, he will only have one year remaining on it.

TEAMtalk is aware that Tottenham would likely request a sum of money equivalent to approximately £20 million in exchange for his services, should they decide to sell him at this time.

It will be obvious to make Rodon’s stay permanent if Leeds wins promotion.

Leeds has 16 games played so far and has given up 16 goals, which is tied for the second-best defensive record behind leaders Leicester.

With his own little piece of Wales in Farke’s squad, it’s obvious the player is enjoying life at Leeds as well. In fact, the Whites have three senior Wales players in their ranks at the moment, with Dan James and Ethan Ampadu also making a name for themselves in Farke’s starting lineup.
