What Kalen DeBoer has said about transfer quarterback Austin Mack

Before accepting the Alabama job, DeBoer addressed his Huskies 2024 class and mentioned Mack.

Since assuming the head coaching position at Alabama, Kalen DeBoer has made his first commitment, and it’s to a team he knows well. On Thursday night, Folsom, California native and former Washington quarterback Austin Mack declared his commitment on Twitter.

The 226-pound, 6-foot-6 player will still be eligible for four more years after not playing as a freshman in 2023. Mack began his senior year of high school as a first-year starter, throwing for 3,498 yards with 40 touchdown passes and five interceptions.

Kalen DeBoer and the former 4-star recruit reunite at Alabama

Even though Kalen DeBoer is the 2023 AP Coach of the Year, the sport’s fastest rising leader, and an indisputable program igniter, he is not Nick Saban. As a result, a large number of Alabama football players who initially pledged to suit up for the seven-time national champion are using the transfer website. But by bringing in someone from his recent past, the new man in charge is somewhat replenishing his talent pool.

According to On3.com’s Hayes Fawcett, former Washington quarterback Austin Mack has decided to follow the man who first recruited him and is now a formal member of the Crimson Tide. A program with doubts about its quarterback room going into the previous season will now proceed with a potentially promising future.
Due in large part to the presence of electric quarterback Michael Penix Jr., Mack, a four-star recruit who committed to the Huskies in February of last year, did not see the field in 2023. With four years left on his eligibility, he should have a decent chance of eventually competing for Tuscaloosa’s starting position.

With their respective coaching changes, Alabama and Washington were bound to experience significant roster disruptions, especially given how convenient the transfer portal rules are these days. While serving in Seattle, DeBoer swiftly created one of the nation’s most exciting offenses, so Alabama football fans have high hopes for this new era.

After some inconsistent performances this past season, the Tide’s offense is in dire need of reconstruction. It’s obvious that Kalen DeBoer thinks Austin Mack has the potential to play a big role in the solution.
