Good news, bad news on the coaching search front…

More NFL roadblocks faced Sherrone Moore’s efforts to bolster his coaching staff today, but the overall picture is positive.

As promised by the title of today’s 3R report, “Pro coaching jobs impacting Michigan’s target list,” let’s start with some bad news.

I have received information from several sources that Doug Mallory, the analyst for Michigan, will be leaving the show to join the NFL. He’s reportedly on his way to Baltimore to take up a secondary coaching position, most likely with the safetyties. When Dennard Wilson, the current defensive backs coach, left the Ravens to take a defensive coordinator position with the Tennessee Titans, the position became available. The 59-year-old Mallory was acknowledged in the program for having a major impact on Michigan’s back-end coverage variations. He served as a defensive assistant for the Atlanta Falcons from 2015 to 2020, which was his final on-field coaching position. He was the defensive backs coach or the assistant defensive backs coach for the final three of those years.

Then, according to a source, graduate assistant Dylan Roney is also going to the NFL, most likely to work as a quality control assistant for the Los Angeles Chargers. Jesse Minter is one of Roney’s biggest supporters, as I noted in the 3R report earlier today, so it’s not shocking that the gifted young coach called out West. I wouldn’t discount the chance that Michigan is interested in hiring Roney as an on-field coach. That most likely depends on how the defensive coordinator position plays out.

There’s no denying that Jim Harbaugh had some outstanding coaches working for him in Ann Arbor.
Fans of Michigan were initially dubious when Jim Harbaugh appointed a young, promising coach as his defensive coordinator prior to the 2021 season. Since Mike Macdonald, 33, had never served as a coordinator before, it seemed to Jim that big brother John was simply lending him a helping hand when he needed it. The Wolverine defense was elevated to a top ten ranking under Macdonald, who proved to be one of the best coordinators in the nation. His time in Ann Arbor was brief because John Harbaugh quickly rehired him to serve as the Ravens’ new DC. As the new head coach of the Seattle Seahawks, Macdonald is currently the league’s youngest head coach.

Jay Harbaugh will be moving to Seattle to work as Macdonald’s special teams coordinator. While most people thought Jay would be moving to Los Angeles to live with his father, it turns out he will be in the state of Washington, a little further north. After just a year together in Ann Arbor, Macdonald saw enough potential in the younger Harbaugh to offer him a key position in Seattle. Clearly, the two got along well.

It should be noted that Ryan Ficken, Jim Harbaugh’s special teams coordinator at the moment, is an excellent one. The Chargers are playing at a high level under the 43-year-old assistant, and his team is regarded as one of the best in the NFL.
