In 1988, Eli Gold started calling Alabama football games.
WBRC TUSCALOOSA, AL – Students at the University of Alabama are responding to the news that Crimson Tide voice Eli Gold will not be doing play-by-play for Alabama football this season.
Students all throughout campus were shocked to learn of Eli Gold’s passing. Although they are wishing him well, they are also wondering what the upcoming football season will be like without him as a 36-year tradition comes to an end.
Freshman Roscoe Powell stated, “I guess you could call it his trademark—the way he said ‘touchdown, Alabama,’ every time we scored.”
Gold stated unequivocally that he did not retire and informed Mike Dubberly of WBRC FOX6 that the university decided not to bring him back.
Caleb Messerly, a student, stated, “I was really sad because he has such an iconic voice and such an iconic way of saying the things that are happening in the game.”
Fans of the Crimson Tide are shocked by this announcement even more since famed coach Nick Saban declared his retirement earlier this year.
Shane Vanderhagen, a student, stated, “I think it’s kind of a sign of changing times in Tuscaloosa—losing another legend, somewhat to Nick Saban.”
“It was always something that had to happen for his sake, with things like his health issues from 2022, but I don’t think he wanted it or really anyone on campus wanted it,” stated James Tipton, a student.
It’s the beginning of a new era for Alabama football, according to several students.
“It’s going to be changing towards a modern lens and I think it’s definitely just a culture shift,” Tipton stated. “There has been a long history of tradition behind it, so this is undoubtedly a significant change.”
Even though this 36-year tale is coming to an end, UA students are aware of the enduring influence Gold will always have on the Tide.
