Quarterback Russell Wilson will begin his third professional act in 2024.
His ten-year tenure with the Seattle Seahawks, during which he led the team to its first Super Bowl championship and cemented his immortality in Emerald City, was the first act.
In contrast, the second act had a disastrous two-year stint with the Denver Broncos following a sensational trade in March 2022.
Wilson now has a one-year deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers. At a career turning point, Wilson gave an explanation of his decision to join the team in his first press conference on Friday.
“It’s a great tradition. To be able to work, to be able to compete with these guys every single day, it’s the gift of this game,” Wilson said. “The reason I came here is because I wanted to be able to win championships with coach [Mike] Tomlin and these guys in the locker room.”
While they have yet to flatline under the consistent Tomlin, the Steelers have struggled a bit in recent years. The team’s last playoff win came all the way back in 2016 in the divisional round against the Kansas City Chiefs.
“We have so many outstanding players. Individuals like as Cam Heyward, the defensive tackle, said Wilson. “And clearly, Mr. T.J. Watt, the linebacker, is a person who deserves to win Defensive Player of the (Year) for a number of reasons—this was his third or fourth opportunity to win the award.
“… I’m appreciative of the chance to pursue and accomplish our goal, which is to win football games.”
In 2024, the Steelers will travel to Mile High Stadium to play Denver. There will undoubtedly be a lot of vengeance narratives going up to this game.
