SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) – The San Francisco 49ers have agreed to a deal with quarterback Joshua Dobbs to give the team another option at backup behind Brock Purdy.
The 49ers will add Dobbs to their roster, taking up the place left empty by Sam Darnold’s signing with Minnesota last week, according to Dobbs’ agent Mike McCartney.
Brandon Allen, San Francisco’s third-string quarterback, has previously re-signed, providing the team with two experienced options in addition to Purdy.
Dobbs signed in the winter to be a backup in Cleveland, and that was the beginning of an eventful 2023 season filled with travel.
After being traded to Arizona during training camp, he began the season as the starting quarterback as Kyler Murray recovered from knee surgery.
When Murray came back, Dobbs was dealt to the Minnesota Vikings, who needed a quarterback after Kirk Cousins went down with a season-ending Achilles injury.
Dobbs came off the bench to lead a comeback win over Atlanta just five days after joining the Vikings and started four more games in Minnesota.
Dobbs made 12 starts and appeared in 13 games in all last season, completing 62.2% of his passes for 2,464 yards, 13 TDs, 10 interceptions and a 79.5 passer rating, He also had 421 yards rushing and six TDs.
In 2017, Pittsburgh selected Dobbs in the fourth round of the draft. Throughout his career, he has also been a member of the rosters in Jacksonville, Cleveland, Detroit, and Tennessee.
After signing tackle Brandon Parker to a one-year contract earlier in the day, the 49ers increased the depth of their offensive line. After being selected by the Raiders in the third round of the 2018 draft, Parker has played in 59 games with 33 starts.
Additionally, San Francisco confirmed a number of transactions that were previously reported, including the signing of defensive end Leonard Floyd to a two-year contract and the one-year contracts of linebacker DeVondre Campbell, offensive tackle Jon Feliciano, and cornerbacks Chase Lucas and Isaac Yiadom.

The league found administrative payroll accounting errors from the 49ers that resulted from the team’s misreporting of their cumulative player compensation at the end of 2022, Tom Pelissero reports. As a result, In the 2025 NFL Draft, San Francisco will not receive their initial fifth-round pick.
Furthermore, the team’s #41 pick in the fourth round will be moved to the conclusion of the round in favor of compensatory pick #135.
Notwithstanding the miscalculation, the NFL concluded that San Francisco would have always been subject to the salary cap. The 49ers also issued a statement in the midst of the announcement.
“We acknowledge accountability and accept the discipline issued by the NFL as a result of the payroll error made by a clerk. According to Ari Meirov, the team stated, “At no point did we mislead or otherwise deceive the league or gain a competitive advantage in connection with the payroll mistake.”
Despite the error, San Francisco will continue to push forward in their quest to win the ultimate NFL prize.
