But the arrival of the team of James Ward-Prowse and Edson Alvarez from Southampton and Ajax, respectively, has greatly allayed such concerns.
Despite the fact that both have made a significant positive difference during their brief stays in claret and blue, the former is grabbing the majority of the attention in the early goings of the new season.
The midfielder has a goal and three assists in his first three games for the Hammers, which speaks highly of his impact in the final third.
The former Southampton player became the first player to either score or assist a goal in each of his first three Premier League games for the club, according to OptaJoe (1 September), and those numbers have earned him a place in West Ham history.

Trent Alexander-Arnold of Liverpool (12) and Mason Mount of Manchester United (11), who are his closest rivals, are both in front of him.
The East London team is currently ranked in the top four after its first four games thanks in large part to the former Saints captain, who has been instrumental in their outstanding start to the season.
The London Stadium team now has three victories and one tie, putting them two points behind Manchester City in first place.
