When facing Tottenham’s nine men, Chelsea needed to wait until the 75th minute to score, but Paul Merson believes Postecoglou ought to have changed up his approach by then.

Merson called Postecoglou’s strategies “extraordinary,” but he feels the Australian should have adopted a different strategy later in the match.

The legendary Arsenal player wrote, “Tottenham playing on the halfway line with nine players was just extraordinary.” It was unlike anything I had ever seen. But Ange Postecoglou ought to have adopted a different strategy.

“You have to make a change when it’s still 1-1 in the final fifteen minutes or so. When there are only 15 or 20 minutes remaining in the game, the clock ticks down much more quickly. Put yourself nine yards behind the ball and give Chelsea a serious struggle.

“I like Postecoglou, and I think that, playing against 10 men, he probably thought Chelsea was going to score in the second half. It’s useless to go out with a whimper, playing 10 behind the ball and never looking like scoring a goal.”

After Guglielmo Vicario’s outstanding performance had kept Spurs at bay, Spurs’ luck finally ran out in the 75th minute when Nicolas Jackson found the back of the net.

However, Tottenham created chances after Chelsea took the lead, with Son Heung-Min and Rodrigo Bentancur coming close.

A little bit offside, but still, Eric Dier had the ball in the net as well. Tottenham’s bravery was exposed when Jackson, of course, eventually completed his hat-trick.

In spite of a crushing loss in the London derby, Postecoglou and Spurs have nevertheless garnered a lot of praise.
