Tottenham vs Wolves: Half time preview as Brennan Johnson storm fans with goal and shocking celebration

What Brennan Johnson did to pay tribute to James Maddison after huge Tottenham moment vs Wolves

Latest Tottenham news as Brennan Johnson sends a clear message to James Maddison following his first goal for Spurs

Brennan Johnson scored his first goal for Tottenham in the early stages of the Premier League clash against Wolves. The Wales international joined on this past summer’s deadline day in a £47.5million deal from Nottingham Forest with his starting debut coming in the North London Derby against Arsenal.

While the Lilywhites put in a great performance at Emirates Stadium, Johnson left the pitch early after feeling his hamstring. As a result, he missed a number of weeks of action through injury before making his starting return against another London rival in Chelsea earlier this week.

Unfortunately, with Cristian Romero sent off, Johnson was the attacker sacrificed in the first half with Eric Dier coming on. Prior to being withdrawn, Johnson thought he had assisted Son Heung-min to double Spurs’ lead in the same way he did the previous week against Crystal Palace, however the goal was disallowed for a marginal offside.

In his limited minutes, Johnson has already proven the value he can add to Spurs and with James Maddison now out injured, those demands will have increased with the 22-year-old answering them emphatically. After just three minutes, Johnson guided home a Pedro Porro cut-back to put the visitors in front at Molineux.

Johnson then wheeled away with his team-mates before he and Porro paid tribute to Maddison likely watching the game at home with his trademark darts throw celebration. Son and Maddison usually pull out the iconic action after the combining for a goal and with the latter not available, Johnson sent a clear message of support to his team-mate.

Wolves responded brightly to going behind with the makeshift back four deployed by Postecoglou tested in the early stages. With Destiny Udogie suspended, Emerson Royal was frequently inverting to overload the midfield with Pape Matar Sarr as the beneficiary finding space as Maddison would do if he was involved.

Spurs half time ratings vs Wolves – A moment of creativity

After the first 45 minutes of play in Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Premier League match this afternoon at Molineux, here is our rating of the Tottenham Hotspur players.

Right now, Ange Postecoglou’s team leads 1-0 going into halftime.

Guglielmo Vicario: Did well to get down low to save from Lemina just after the half hour mark which was the first time he had been tested. 6.

Pedro Porro: His pinpoint ball across the six-yard box allowed Johnson to tap home. 6.

Eric Dier: Made his first start of the season.  A couple of nervy moments early on. 5.

Emerson Royal: Has had his hands full with Semedo down the flank.  Booked for a foolish lunging challenge just before half time. 5.

Ben Davies: Made an important block on ten minutes to deny a shot on goal.  Thankfully Wolves have not troubled the Welshman or Dier with trying to get in behind them. 6.

Pape Matar Sarr: Has not played at his usual level, has struggled to make anything happen. 5.

Yves Bissouma: Has not looked as threatening on the ball since his red card at Luton.  Booked and will now miss the match against Aston Villa. 5.

Eric DierPierre-Emile Hojbjerg: Lost possession of the ball on at least four occasions. 5.

Dejan Kulusevski: A clever flick opened the space in behind for Porro to cross to Johnson – Spurs’ biggest threat, especially in the first half hour. 7.

Heung-min Son: Has not had much to play off with so many changes in th side happening behind him, the lack of creativity in midfield is harming the South Korean. 5.

Brennan Johnson: Made a clever run at the back post to tap home to score his first Spurs goal.  Needs to be used as more of an attacking outlet. 6.
