Kansas City Chiefs lament their team’s last-minute defeat in Green Bay

The last 1:09 of Sunday night’s game in Green Bay included an unnecessary roughness penalty, an overturned fumble recovery, an ejection, and a contentious pass interference no-call for the Kansas City Chiefs.

After all was said and done, the Packers hung on for the 27-19 victory, while Kansas City, in need of a touchdown and two-point conversion to force OT, saw Patrick Mahomes’ pass into the end zone on the game’s final play blocked.

The Chiefs dropped to 8-4 after their third straight loss, ruining their hopes of tying the Miami Dolphins and Baltimore Ravens for the top record in the AFC.

Officials decided not to raise the flag for player interference (PI) when Chiefs wide receiver Marcquez Valdes-Scantling appeared to be covered by Packers defensive back Carrin Valentine during a deep pass from quarterback Kirk Mahomes on a first-and-10 from the 50-yard line. The incident became a talking point in the Chiefs locker room following the game. With 14 seconds left, the Chiefs would have been within the Green Bay 10-yard line if the penalty had been called.

According to Valdes-Scantling, he questioned the referee about the absence of a penalty after the game.

“I wasn’t even acknowledged by him,” stated Valdes-Scantling.

In response, Valdes-Scantling said, “I was trying to get the ball and ended up on the ground,” when asked if it was a penalty. They may or may not have seen what I attempted to capture, but I was unable to do so.

The Chiefs eventually got into Packers territory thanks to a touchdown from Mahomes, but he was unsuccessful on his final four throw attempts, and the game ended at the Green Bay 33.

When asked why there was no penalty called on the pass to Valdes-Scantling, Mahomes responded, “Obviously, the guy was probably a little early, but at the end of the game, they’re letting guys play.” “I kind of agree with it. Though it’s difficult, I would rather that you let the boys play and win on the field. I cannot wish for a flag. I have to make an effort to go out there and help the rest of my teammates and myself win the game.”

When questioned about the play after the game, referee Brad Allen stated in a pool report that “the covering official has to judge if contact materially inhibits the receiver on every play when there may or may not be pass interference, either offensive or defensive. Furthermore, the covering officials in this instance made a wise decision by ruling that there was no meaningful restriction that qualified as defensive pass interference.”

Earlier in the drive, Chiefs running backIsaiah Pacheco took a swing at a Packers player, costing the team 15 crucial yards and earning him an ejection from the game.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid stated, “You can’t do that,” following the game. “You have to stay composed.”

Mahomes said he valued Pacheco’s effort even though he understood the penalty cost the Chiefs.

According to Mahomes, “I adore the fire from (Pacheco).” “We start off offensively with that. Since we were already in a difficult circumstance, it goes without saying that you raised a flag in this instance, but I never want to take away a guy’s desire. From it, he will grow. That’s what we need on this team to have the success we want, and I’m sure he won’t make that mistake again.

Green Bay defensive back Jonathan Owens was called for a personal foul when he struck quarterback Patrick Mahomes during a 10-yard run, setting up the Chiefs’ wild last drive. The play put the ball at Green Bay’s 45.

“In my mind, I just wanted to hit him before he went out of bounds to try and knock him back to keep the clock rolling,” said Owens. “Just keep the clock going and try to make a team play; I think it took less than a minute.” Take advantage of any opportunity you get to legally hit a quarterback. I knew it was legal.”

After what looked to be a fumble by Kansas City receiver Rashee Rice, Green Bay’s Corey Ballentine recovered it 68 yards for what would have been a game-winning score. However, a review revealed that Rice was down before the ball was released, allowing the Chiefs to keep possession.
